A Guide to a few Cajun Things:

In July, Colin and I joined my family on their beach trip in Pass Christian, MS. Before flying directly back to KC, we decided to spend two days touring New Orleans. While things are a little weird with Covid, we were still able to make the most of the time we spent there.

I’m going to include what we did on this trip, and while I’m sure there is TON more to do, this is what we were able to cover in the 36 hours we were there.

Let’s geaux! Lol

Where we stayed:

The Roosevelt: A quintessential southern hotel if I’ve ever seen one. We often lean towards more contemporary hotels, but I figured since we were in Louisiana, it was only fitting. The Roosevelt was gorgeous - and had so many historic features. The lobby is reminiscent of a ballroom with ornate gold accents and overstuffed velvet couches, and the rooftop pool was an added bonus. We booked the hotel using Hilton Honors points, apply for a Hilton Honors Credit care here to get bonus points.

Where to eat:

A quick note, during COVID, reservations are a must. Restaurant capacities are limited and so it’s important to make a reservation to ensure you get a table.

The Ruby Slipper: The IT brunch spot. Did someone say “pig candy bacon bites”?? While the Ruby Slipper has several locations along the coasts of several southern states, it originated in NOLA. I’d suggest going to their first location, which is the one in the Central Business District. Biscuits and benedicts and omelets, ohhh my. We did not go here during this trip, however, I’ve been here before and strongly recommend.

Cafe Du Monde: Is it a little touristy side? Yes. Do you still need to go for the full New Orleans experience? YES. Be sure to go to the location in the French Quarter, and don’t wear black because the powder sugar on the beignets will travel to your clothes. Lol @ Colin.

Auction House Market: A WHOLE VIBE TRENDY FOOD HALL VIBE. Auction House Market has multiple food vendors, ranging from sushi, to grain bowls, to savory crepes and Italian baked goods - everyone can find a lunch or dinner option here. The aesthetic of this restaurant was second to none, and basically begged to be grammed lol.

Justine: This dinner spot is probably the most “instagrammable” restaurant on my list simply because it is beautiful. The food is really good, but expect it to be a little on the adventurous side. (For example, I ordered the country-fried garden oysters which are actually fried escargot) That being said, be adventurous! You won’t regret making a reservation here. Also as a word to the wise, make sure to book a reservation ASAP as they fill quickly.

Justine’s outdoor seating.

Emerils: This was Colin’s favorite restaurant, but a lot of that could be contributed to the fact that the waitstaff wore trendy sneakers, and hip-hop nation streamed on the surround sound haha. The food was SO GOOD, and was probably the best food we had that weekend. The food does change seasonally, so be sure to check our what they are currently serving! (Random fact, the owner is famous chef Emeril Lagasse, he owns the property next to the beach house where we stayed in Pass Christian.)

What to do:

Visit Jackson Square Garden and the St. Louis Cathedral - absolutely gorgeous, and probably considered the landmark of New Orleans. Be sure to visit before 7 pm, otherwise, the gates are locked. (This is free, btw!)

Bourbon Street (I’d suggest waiting until after Covid) - The street performers are so fun to watch. Take cash and tip well!

The Shops at Canal Place - If you’re a shopper, be sure to stop by! They boast being an “upscale shopping center with an airy feel”. You can also expect a range of shops, spanning from Anthropolgie to Chanel.

Alright gang, that’s all I have! If you are making a trip to NOLA anytime soon, I hope you have the best time. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

xx
